Bitumen is dense, highly viscous, a petroleum-based hydrocarbon found in deposits such as oil sands and pitch lakes (natural bitumen) or obtained as a residue of the distillation of crude oil (refined bitumen). BS group produces high-quality bitumen, which is called refined bitumen. This type of bitumen is a low-grade crude oil composed of complex, heavy hydrocarbons. This bitumen is black or dark-colored (solid, semi-solid, viscous) and amorphous.

Most refined bitumen is used in the construction industry. Mainly, it serves its use in paving and roofing applications. 85% of all bitumen is used as a binder in asphalt for roads, runways, parking lots, and footpaths.

Bitumen is classified base on different test method as Penetration grade (classified by different penetration range), Performance grade (PG), which is classified by its performance indicated in different temperatures, and Viscosity grade (VG), which use viscosity as a parameter to classify bitumen.
